Performing Inherent Risk Assessments

This guide will show you how to conduct an inherent risk assessment for your sites. The assessments can be conducted for different threat, compliance, and hazard based assessments.

Written Instructions:

  1. Access the Scenario Details page

    1. In the middle of the screen, you can find the scenario you would like to perform inherent risk assessments for, and select the arrow next to that scenario

  2. You will be brought to the Scenario Detail Page.

    1. By selecting the “Inherent Risk” Tab within the middle of the screen, you will be brought to the inherent risk landscape for the currently selected scenario.

  3. Assessing the Inherent Risk of the Scenario at a specific location

    1. Description: The inherent Risk score allows for sites to be ranked for a scenario. The risk score consists of two main values: Probability and Severity.

      • These values are multiplied together to generate a standardized score that has the same weight across locations within an organization.

    2. Once the location is selected that will have an inherent risk assessment conducted for it, navigate to the Scenario section for that location’s detail page. Select the pencil button under the Probability and Severity buttons to begin assessing

  4. Variables will effect the Inherent Risk that is Associated with a location of a particular scenario

    1. Once the “pencil” located under the Probability column is selected, this will bring up the Probability Matrix for the selected scenario at the selected site. This also applies for the Severity matrix.

    2. A Modal will appear with the probability/severity matrix for the Scenario at the selected location

    3. Assess how the given measures will affect the probability/severity that will need to be conducted at the site that is having inherent risk assessed.

      1. What is the effect of (i.e the amount of crime in a one mile proximity) on the probability of this scenario happening?

      2. What is the severity (i.e the impact on assets) if this scenario were to occur at this location?

    4. Once finished, select Save, and this will submit these values for these variables.

You can update inherent scores at any time. In fact, you are encouraged to review inherent risk often. If you are coming back to edit scores after the initial input, you will be required to input a “justification” as to why the score is changing, for history and tracking purposes.

5. Once both the probability and severity matrices have been filled out fully, an inherent risk score will be generated for that location. Once more locations have scores entered for them, a bar graph will populate that shows inherent risk scores for all locations from highest to lowest, which can be sorted based on the table that is below it.

Variables/measures can be different based on the scenario you are assessing, and can be changed for inherent risk needs. Please see this article to explore how to do this
